And yes group action does happen. The dark room is the closest thing to group sex at the baths. It is only natural as two guys are getting it on in the dark, a third and fourth may hear the grunts and join in. And before you know it, group sex is taking place. A lot of times in these group situation, there is a lot of touching and groping from the other men and you have no idea what that person looks like. It could be a 65-year-old grandfather or a 23-year-old college student. But if you can just let that thought go, all you know in the darkness at that moment is that groups of you are all feeling, touching and sucking each other and it feels great.
Occasionally I've ventured into the dark room, and felt another guy's body against mine. You don't know how many times I've felt a really big belly or the receding hairline. And I know that this is a not person I would normally hook-up with. So for me, I don't like the dark room, cause I really want to know and see the person I'm with. But everyone is different.
Now while every bathhouse has some sort of dark orgy room, many other bathhouses have what is know as a "Dungeon Room" which is also dark. This allows gay men to act out their fantasies. For instance a lot of gay men find sex in an alley or in a public place exciting, but very risky. So by playing out their fantasy in a bathhouse, under these conditions (Dungeon Room/fake alleyway), they can act out in a safe and controlled environment. If a guy wants to experiment with S&M, but does not have the proper equipment, they can head off to the baths. Swings, whips, leather, bondage equipment and prison cells are all featured in the dark dungeon room so you can experiment. I have seen many couples come to the baths together, so they can act out their fantasies and have a good time. Now not all bathhouses have S&M equipment, so you should check, before making a date.
With the orgy and dungeon rooms being enormously popular with many men, some bathhouse have seized on that appeal by hosting a Blackout Night. This is where the entire bathhouse is completely dark, and none of the lights work. Again your eyes do adjust to complete darkness, but you find yourself bumping into walls, people (hopefully nice ones), even furniture. Blackout Night could be re-named Orgy Night, because that is what it is, one big orgy, with score of guys doing it with each other. Although some light comes from the emergency exits signs and TV screens, it is pretty much pitch dark. You are given a small flashlight so you can navigate through the hallways, but that is it. Some places do not even offer that, but instead neon necklaces to indicate your preference (e.g. Red-Top, Green-Bottom). There is no need for communication, just look at the necklace and go for your preference. Blackout Nights are so popular, that some clubs host one at least once a month. It is their biggest moneymaker every month as scores of gay men line up around the block to get in. A few baths have enjoyed so much popularity from these nights that they have kept the light shut-off, and become known as the bathhouse that is permanently dark.
Now you can also use the darkness to your own advantage. All rooms in a bathhouse have light switches that let you dim the lights. So the customer has control on how bright or dark they want their room. Some men will rent a room, lie on the bed with the door open, and watch men pass by. But they keep the light inside the room is turned completely off, so all anyone sees is a darkened room. Now there are a few reasons for this. One, the guy may want to screen potential lays. Although the room is dark, he can see everybody who passes by. He probably does not want to be bothered by people he deems unworthy of his time. Guys passing by his room have to make an effort to squint and see who is in there. Most times it is so dark, that they cannot see anything. Again, it is a way to be selective and screen potential lays. I remember once seeing a couple, intertwined with each other on a bed, watching the men pass by their room. It was obvious they came to the baths together, in search of a "threesome". Whenever anyone "undesirable" (in their minds I guess) approached or even passed by their room, one of the guys would shut off the lights, making it totally pitch dark. I guess the message they were sending by that action is "NO".
But another reason some guys keep their room dark is so no one can see parts of their body that they are embarrassed about. They feel a bit more confident with the shadows and darkness obscuring parts of their bodies. But their minds are open for business. Guys who cruise a darken room can do one of three things. Some guys will take the chance, and go in. They have no idea what the guy looks like, but just like in the orgy room, they have sex with their dicks, not with their minds. Some guys, not knowing what is in there, stand by the door, and play with themselves to see if there is any interest. They also try to get a better look at the guy. If at any time the guy in the darken room is not interested in what is standing in front of his door, he can say, "no thanks". But if there is interest, he can say, "come on in". So while that is a great screening process, not everybody likes it. A small majority of guys who encounter a darken room, continue to pass by and cruise without breaking stride. In their minds if they cannot see what they are shopping for, why purchase it. These are men that you will not see in the darken orgy room because they are so selective, they want to see what they are getting into. So if you keep your room dark, you could be missing out on someone kind, friendly, intelligent, or maybe a millionaire passing by your room, and vice-versa!
So am I afraid of the dark in the baths? Only when I am alone!
